Biowaste home composting: Experimental process monitoring and quality control
none5noBecause home composting is a prevention option in managing biowaste at local levels, the objective of
the present study was to contribute to the knowledge of the process evolution and compost quality that
can be expected and obtained, respectively, in this decentralized option. In this study, organized as the
research portion of a provincial project on home composting in the territory of Pesaro-Urbino (Central
Italy), four experimental composters were first initiated and temporally monitored. Second, two small
sub-sets of selected provincial composters (directly operated by households involved in the project)
underwent quality control on their compost products at two different temporal steps. The monitored
experimental composters showed overall decreasing profiles versus composting time for moisture,
organic carbon, and C/N, as well as overall increasing profiles for electrical conductivity and total nitrogen,
which represented qualitative indications of progress in the process. Comparative evaluations of the
monitored experimental composters also suggested some interactions in home composting, i.e., high C/N
ratios limiting organic matter decomposition rates and final humification levels; high moisture contents
restricting the internal temperature regime; nearly horizontal phosphorus and potassium evolutions contributing
to limit the rates of increase in electrical conductivity; and prolonged biowaste additions contributing
to limit the rate of decrease in moisture. The measures of parametric data variability in the two
sub-sets of controlled provincial composters showed decreased variability in moisture, organic carbon,
and C/N from the seventh to fifteenth month of home composting, as well as increased variability in electrical
conductivity, total nitrogen, and humification rate, which could be considered compatible with the
respective nature of decreasing and increasing parameters during composting. The modeled parametric
kinetics in the monitored experimental composters, along with the evaluation of the parametric central
tendencies in the sub-sets of controlled provincial composters, all indicate that 12–15 months is a suitable
duration for the appropriate development of home composting in final and simultaneous compliance

Biological Characteristics and Medical Treatment of Breast Cancer in Young Women—A Featured Population: Results from the NORA Study
Background. The present paper described the biological characteristics and clinical behavior of young women in the cohort NORA study Patients and Methods. From 2000–2002, patients (N > 3500) were enrolled at 77 Italian hospitals. Women aged ≤50 years (N = 1013) were stratified into age groups (≤35, 36–40, 41–45, and 46–50 years). The relationship between age and patient characteristics, cancer presentation, and treatment was analyzed. Results. Younger women more frequently had tumors with ER/PgR-negative(χ2 = 7.07; P = .008), HER2 amplification (χ2 = 5.76; P = .01), and high (≥10%) Ki67 labelling index (χ2 = 9.53; P = .002). Positive nodal status, large tumors, and elevated Ki67 all associated with the choice for chemotherapy followed by endocrine therapy in hormone receptor-positive patients (P < .0001). At univariate analysis, ER-ve status, chemotherapy and age resulted as the only statistically significant variables (HR = 2.02, P = .004, and >40 versus ≤40, P < .0001, resp.). At multivariate analysis, after adjustment for significant clinical and pathological factors, age remains a significant prognostic variable (HR = 0.93, P = .0021). Conclusion. This cohort study suggests that age per sè is an important prognostic factor. The restricted role of early diagnosis and the aggressive behavior of cancer in this population make necessary the application of targeted medical strategies crucial
A stochastic approach to the solution of magnetohydrodynamic equations
The construction of stochastic solutions is a powerful method to obtain
localized solutions in configuration or Fourier space and for parallel
computation with domain decomposition. Here a stochastic solution is obtained
for the magnetohydrodynamics equations. Some details are given concerning the
numerical implementation of the solution which is illustrated by an example of

Diffusion entropy and waiting time statistics of hard x-ray solar flares
We analyze the waiting time distribution of time distances between two
nearest-neighbor flares. This analysis is based on the joint use of two
distinct techniques. The first is the direct evaluation of the distribution
function , or of the probability, , that no time
distance smaller than a given is found. We adopt the paradigm of the
inverse power law behavior, and we focus on the determination of the inverse
power index , without ruling out different asymptotic properties that
might be revealed, at larger scales, with the help of richer statistics. The
second technique, called Diffusion Entropy (DE) method, rests on the evaluation
of the entropy of the diffusion process generated by the time series. The
details of the diffusion process depend on three different walking rules, which
determine the form and the time duration of the transition to the scaling
regime, as well as the scaling parameter . With the first two rules the
information contained in the time series is transmitted, to a great extent, to
the transition, as well as to the scaling regime. The same information is
essentially conveyed, by using the third rules, into the scaling regime, which,
in fact, emerges very quickly after a fast transition process. We show that the
significant information hidden within the time series concerns memory induced
by the solar cycle, as well as the power index . The scaling parameter
becomes a simple function of , when memory is annihilated. Thus,
the three walking rules yield a unique and precise value of if the memory
is wisely taken under control, or cancelled by shuffling the data. All this

Predictive value of heidelberg retina tomograph parameters for the development of glaucoma in the European glaucoma prevention study
PURPOSE:
To determine whether baseline Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) measurements of the optic disc are associated with the development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in individuals with ocular hypertension in the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS).
DESIGN:
Retrospective analysis of a prospective, randomized, multicenter, double-masked, controlled clinical trial.
METHODS:
There were 489 participants in the HRT Ancillary Study to the EGPS. Each baseline HRT parameter was assessed in univariate and multivariate proportional hazards models to determine its association with the development of OAG. Proportional hazards models were used to identify HRT variables that predicted which participants in the EGPS had developed OAG. Development of OAG was based on visual field and/or optic disc changes.
RESULTS:
At a median follow-up time of about 5 years, 61 participants developed OAG. In multivariate analyses, adjusting for randomization arm, age, baseline IOP, central corneal thickness, pattern standard deviation, and HRT disc area, the following HRT parameters were associated with the development of OAG: the "outside normal limits" classification of the Frederick Mikelberg (FSM) discriminant function (hazard ratio [HR] 2.51, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.45-4.35), larger mean cup depth (HR 1.64, 95% CI: 1.21-2.23), cup-to-disc area ratio (HR 1.43, 95% CI: 1.14-1.80), linear cup-to-disc ratio (HR 1.43, 95% CI: 1.13-1.80), cup area (HR 1.33, 95% CI: 1.08-1.64), smaller rim area (HR 1.33, 95% CI: 1.07-1.64), larger cup volume (HR 1.30, 95% CI: 1.05-1.61), smaller rim volume (HR 1.25, 95% CI: 1.01-1.54), larger maximum cup depth (HR 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36), and cup shape measure (HR 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36).
CONCLUSIONS:
Several baseline HRT parameters, alone or in combination with baseline clinical and demographic factors, were significantly associated with the development of OAG among the EGPS participants
